Bee Keeping Basics & Free Honey Samples

Location: Conservation Office at Brigg’s Woods Park

Mark Moberly of MOBEEZ a local bee keeper will be presenting on the basics of bee keeping. He will be discussing what can be done in city limits and out of city limits for bee keeping. We will be discussing the benefits of raising and eating local honey. Honey can be substituted for sugar sometimes when cooking. Some honey recipes for cooking will be available for people to take. Bee keeper concerns and costs will also be discussed in this presentation. Find out some of the flowering plants that bees prefer for planting your own back yard butterfly and pollinator flower garden. Boone River Clean Up

Location: Briggs Woods Park at Shelter 1
Come and help clean garbage out of our river as we canoe the Boone River. Meet at Shelter # 1 at Brigg’s Woods Park to register and we will start from there.
What to bring: Sunscreen, water, bug spray, shovel, gloves, hat, sunglasses, and canoes. Park your vehicle in the canoe access parking lot located next to the campgrounds. We will be cleaning up the 3.5 Miles of river from Brigg’s Woods Park to Albrights Canoe Access. We will be providing a shuttle bus back from Albrights Canoe Access to Brigg’s Woods Park. Volunteers will receive a free t-shirt. A limited number of canoes are available on a first come first serve basis. Feel free to bring your own canoe. Children under 15 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Parents must sign a waiver and medical information form for all youth under 18. All volunteers must abide by IA DNR boating laws. No alcohol consumption is allowed. We hope to be on the river by around 8:00 am
Bats of Iowa and Bat Night Hike

Join us at the shelter one as we discuss Iowa’s bats and White Nose Syndrome the new disease that threatens them. Why are bats beneficial to people? We will have a presentation followed by a bat night hike and observation by shelter 2. Free bat house plans will be available for those attending. This program is for all ages of people who enjoy bats or are curious about them. If you have a bat costume you should feel free to wear it. Trick or Treating at Brigg’s / Hayrides/ Autumn Night Hike

7:00 to 8:00 pm Shelter 2 Night Hike starts at 7 pm only. We will divide into groups so be sure to check in with the group coordinator at shelter 2.

Bring your camper and decorate your campsite as there will be awards for the best two decorated campsites. Pumpkin painting, hayrides, trick or treating, and meal will be going on before the night hike starts. Come on this night hike and discover what local animals roam around at night in Iowa? There will be several station presenters on the wildlife that live in our county woodlands, prairies, and wetland areas. Park at the beach parking and follow the luminaries to shelter two or ride the hayride over if you choose. The hike will start at 7:00 pm only and people will walk with their guide to the various presenters. Reserve your spot by preregistering by email email@example.com or call us at 515-832-9570 so we can plan for the meal. Check in with the program coordinator at shelter two upon arrival. The night hike will last about one hour so dress appropriately for the weather. The presenters will be volunteers and Hamilton County Conservation staff. This event for is for all ages. Donations taken will support the Naturalist program for Hamilton County. No alcohol consumption is allowed at the event.
Little Wall Lake Halloween Event

Place: Little Wall Lake Park and Campground
Celebrate the fall by participating in this family oriented event. Bring your camper and decorate your campsite as there will be awards for the best two decorated campsites. The Little Wall Lake Park Ranger will be leading a mummy wrapping activity for kids at 3:00 pm by the camper registration kiosk next to the house. Trick or treating and hayrides in the campgrounds will be from 4 pm to 7 pm. No alcohol consumption is allowed at the hayride. Non camping visitors should park in the big parking lot on the north end of the lake. Wear your favorite costume to the event. Night Eyes / Night Hike

Location: Beach Amphitheater at Brigg’s Woods Park, Webster City, IA
Time: 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm
What is different about animal’s eyes to see better at night? Join our county naturalist at the amphitheater for a short presentation and an autumn night hike following. We will hike the trails of Briggs Woods Park and look for owls, bats, deer, raccoons, and other animals of the night. Come and enjoy the sights and sounds of the night and feel free to bring a flashlight. Red covers will be available number of flashlights will be available for your flashlight. This program is for all ages that enjoy a long hike at night. A limited number of flashlights are available so feel free to bring your own.
